Why kids should take guitar lessons (& not piano)...

The age old debate of "which instrument should my kid start with", is as simple as....which one do they WANT to learn? We get it...when we were kids, everyone wanted their kids to learn piano too. But the reality is, most kids have access to many different classes and opportunities now....giving them the chance to play the instrument they want will motivate them to learn, practice, and keep music in their lives as they grow. Read on to learn about guitar lessons near you and why your kids should take them!

1. Instant Wins with Basic Chords

The guitar has some basic chords that are easy to learn and sound great. Open chords (like C, G, D, E, A) use a few fingers and, best of all, they’re foundational! Kids can learn a couple of these chords and play songs within days. That instant gratification keeps them excited and motivated, making it easier to develop skills and move on to more complex songs.

2. Easy to Understand Structure

The guitar’s layout is incredibly visual and logical. Each fret represents a half-step up in pitch, so kids get a clear sense of how notes ascend as they move up the fretboard. The tuning is standardized too—E, A, D, G, B, E—giving them a framework they can easily memorize and navigate.

3. Easy to Start, Fun to Learn

The guitar is surprisingly beginner-friendly! Unlike some instruments that require weeks of “just practicing notes,” kids can learn a simple song on the guitar almost immediately. That instant gratification keeps them excited. (And it keeps them practicing, instead of saying “I’m booooored” and wandering off to watch YouTube.)

4. Guitar is Kid-Size Friendly

Forget carrying around that massive cello or even a trumpet case—guitars come in sizes! There are guitars made for tiny hands, which means they can learn comfortably without arm-stretching yoga moves. Less frustration, more fun. And if you're looking for a great starter instrument, we recommend this one!

5. It’s Surprisingly Versatile

Classical, rock, pop, blues, jazz… the guitar covers it all. Kids don’t just learn “Twinkle Twinkle” (though they totally can). With guitar, they’re learning an instrument that lets them experiment. One day they’re strumming folk, the next, shredding rock. It’s like a musical buffet!

6. Not Too Loud (Looking at You, Drums)

Parents, rejoice: guitars are loud enough to let kids express themselves without needing earplugs or soundproof walls. They can play at full volume or just as easily switch to an acoustic or low-volume practice amp. (And if you do have a mini rocker on your hands, amps have volume knobs for a reason.)

7. Social and Fun in Groups

Ever seen a “band” with just one clarinet? (No offense, clarinet.) The guitar is naturally social and sounds amazing with other instruments. Kids can form little bands, jam with friends, or be the hero of their music class. The more, the merrier! Which is why we recommend our ages 7-14 Group Guitar Class for beginners!

4. It Builds Confidence Fast

There’s nothing quite like the first time a kid plays a song for an audience (even if it’s just the family dog). Seeing them beam with pride? Priceless. The guitar gives kids the chance to perform at home, for friends, and eventually, maybe even at school. Confidence boost, unlocked.
