Mr. Tommy

Saxophone, Piano, & Bass

Mr. Tommy is a sophomore at Oakland University, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Music. Music has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember. With a mother who was a choir director and a sister who filled the house with piano and song, his passion for music grew early and naturally.

His musical journey has primarily been shaped by opportunities in the Western classical tradition, both in performance and pedagogy. However, his ear and interests extend far beyond—it’s not uncommon to find him exploring jazz, pop, hip-hop, electronic, R&B, and rock. That said, he has a soft spot for contemporary compositions and the creativity they inspire.

About Me

In his teaching, Mr. Tommy rewards curiosity and encourages students to see music as an extension of their sense of self. He emphasizes the power of the subconscious mind in learning and refrains from casting judgment on ability—believing that every student can grow when nurtured with patience and positivity.

He uses music not just to teach notes and rhythms, but to model a growth mindset, foster collaboration, and build confidence. For him, music is a lifelong tool for self-discovery, and he’s passionate about helping students find their own voice through it.

Teaching Philosophy

I teach music because I believe it’s one of the most powerful tools for life. Music-making nurtures introspection, promotes a growth mindset, and connects us through shared experience. It’s helped me develop a stronger sense of self, and I want to pass that lens of growth, honesty, and joy on to my students.
